SHAH ALAM: The International Trade and Industry Ministry is considering revising the National Automotive Policy to encourage local automotive players to develop hybrid vehicles, Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin said yesterday.
“We are studying the types of vehicles that use the hybrid technology these few weeks,” he said, adding that Malaysia was “too slanted” towards protection of national cars presently.
Speaking after officiating at the opening of Kawasaki Motors (M) Sdn Bhd’s new factory in Hicom Glenmarie Industrial Park and launch of two new Kawasaki models yesterday, Muhyiddin said higher energy cost due to the fuel price increase recently was bound to encourage consumers to shift towards using fuel-efficient vehicles, including motorcycles, as a mode of transport.
“The current situation is likely to increase demand for motorcycles, which are a cost-efficient and cheap alternative means of transportation in developing countries,” he said.
